  • The Last Few Days and My First Drum

The last few days have been hectic with spending time with family and fishing. From Saturday through Monday I have had 7 hours of sleep due to everything mentioned. Saturday, I took some of my relatives gigging for the first time. Right when we walked in I found a keeper flounder. I let my aunt have the honors of gigging it except she missed and the flounder bolted. We found a few more but they were all too small. Sunday morning I went kayaking around the flats near SLP. The bite was just not there. I did have my first blow up on a bone Super Spook and I now understand the thrill in watching your topwater explode from underneath. After that I mainly spent time with my family.

Today, I met up with one of my friends who is an avid kayak fisherman. He showed me to a good black drum hole. We paddled out and anchored in about 40 ft of water. Initially the water was calm but within half an hour of anchoring the waves rose about a foot. My friend had a double hook up with a 34 inch and 42 inch drum. While paddling back to me my reel went off and I remembered why I love that sound. A drum had taken the cut crab from my light trout rod with 10 pound test. At that moment a fog started to set in and luckily my friend came back in time. He paddled around me and kept an eye out for me so I could concentrate on my fish. After an hour of give and take I managed to bring aboard my 32 inch black drum which was released back into the water. It was a wonderful fight with screaming reels and it was accentuated by the fact that I was in the water on a kayak. Tight lines everyone! I'll be back for more drum on Friday!
