  • Shifting problem

Have a 83 Evinrude 60 recently purchased that runs great but it will not shift properly. If I adjust the shift cable to get it to go into Fwd, the reverse will not engage properly. If I adjust it to go into reverse the fwd will not engage (sits there and claters). I have read elsewhere that it could be the shift cable needs replacing. Anyone had experience with this?

Could be cable. Also could be your clutch dog (wear). You might be able to turn it around. Make sure its not the cable though and the cable is secured to the shifting rod before you tear the lower unit up..

Thx, changed out the cable with another I had, problem persists. I'm suspecting a clutch problem.
