  • Got a First Last Weekend.

Went to Lake Fairfield last weekend to camp out with a buddy. Good times. Did a lot more drinkin' and cookin' than fishing but I did manage a first.

I wanted to catch a blue tilapia, and after a lot of throwing and losing 2 nice ones, I got one into the yak. Cooked him up on the grill along with some ribeyes and had surf and turf!

Interesting fish. Tilapia, along with many other cichlids, are mouth breeders. As soon as the eggs are laid and fertilized, the male holds them in his mouth to protect them. He will also keep the fry there for shelter. The cove I was netting in was filled with nests. They dig holes all over the place, and it looks like the surface of the moon.

Also lots of bowfishermen on that lake with floundering boats, looks like a lot of fun.

I realized that my standing kayak cast netting technique needs much improvement, and I want to learn how to throw a 7' radius net so I can really hammer!

Pretty fish, the pic doesn't really do it justice.
