  • LED lights?

Met a member 2 weeks ago as we waded near the Galveston Airport. He told me about West End Anglers. He had a great 12VDC LED light he built and said the details about purchasing the LEDs and design were on the website. Does anyone know where to go to get this info?

yep those work great, and tom at fishing lights etc is a great guy. Ive also used 12v mr16 led bulbs off ebay. Here is a prototype of mine with some videos of it underwater. I've got some work to do on it, but works pretty good

Not led's.... I wouldn't use led for the same reason you'd rather have HPS on a fan boat instead of halogens. Penetration of the water column!

I used the ones from Academy they are great but a good led setup is way brighter and I can also run on one charge all weekend. It is also a bright white compared to a yellow. They do cost a lot more but they also don't burnout or over heat.

water penetration has to do with brightness, but also wavelength of light. Leds are available in the cool white range, which is more towards the violet end of the spectrum. Halogen is more yellow and HPS is more orange.

Point being HPS is available with massive lumens, but if you were to compare penetration of equally bright lights, say a 20,000 lumen hps vs a 20,000 lumen cool white led ( no such thing ) the cool white would work better. Theoretically you could string together a butt load of led's and get that high lumen output of hps. But I've never seen it done.

Over here in Tx, our waters are not as clear as yours so the type of light used can be a issue. I realize we are talking about underwater lights here so what I am about to say may not matter.
With all the organics that make our water off-color then sometimes penetration can be a issue. One can use the brightest light imaginable and boil the water with it but all the floating sediments will refract that light right back into your retina, so much so that if you was using something like super bright halos you can even burn your retinas much like watching a welders arc.
This is the perfect situation for HPS. It gets to the bottom without the refraction. Another benifit from its orange/yellow glow is you can retain your night vision.
My experience with walking around with underwater lights is you really don't need a lot of power as you are not elevated on a boat platform so you really can't get a good 180 degree look around. The argument almost becomes null when on foot in regards to light types as long as it works well enough to light up the area only a few yards in front of your wading path.
We can take different roads to get to a destination, some may be more eficient than others but as long as we all get to the same destination then it's all good.

I'll believe an LED getting as good penetration as a narrow-beam 12V when I see it. I am honestly very curious and would like to compare them both. If ya'll are down on the island for a gig, PM me and I will stop by and see. I will even give a beer or two to you if you win!
