Fresh Dead (my 11 yo son) and I launched the kayak at Louie's at 6am this morning and fished the marsh west of Highland Bayou. We got into the marsh about 6:30a and worked our way through the marsh reclamation islands. Once the sun got up (7ish), we started seeing redfish with their backs out of the water running shrimp next to the chord grass.
My son put a good cast about 15' in front of a redfish running the grass line, bumped it once then hooked and landed a 20 1/16" redfish. Caught on a 3" new penny Gulp shrimp rigged weedless on a 1/8" plain jig head.
After he caught his fish, we cast to some more reds but couldn't get another hookup. I caught my red blind casting into a marsh drain. It was fractionally shorter than my son's (according to him). Caught on a Hackberry Hustler in Morning Glory on a 1/8" plain jig head. Both fish photo'd and released.
At 7:30a the bite turned off for us. We fished until 10:30a or so without another hookup.
The wind was low early this morning. As the sun came up, it blew from the northwest. As the day went on, the wind got stronger and turned west, then SW. Water looked like marsh water. Tide was high early and then falling in the late morning.
Had a hamburger at Louie's at 11:30 and home around 1p. Great day.
May have some video to share later.
