  • Blacktip landed from kayak

Went kayakfishing in the surf on 8/24/08 and caught a nice 4ft Blacktip shark. It was an awesome experience to hookup with a nice size shark half a mile offshore from a kayak! Caught him on a steel leader with a strip of stingray(speared during a previous gigging trip). It was my first time to use stingray as shark bait and I hookedup within 30min. So I'm sold on using stingrays as shark bait.

Anyone know how to land a big shark on a kayak?

I don't know if I would side saddle and pull that thing up there with me... Did you tie a line around the tail Bailey? How long did you have it near the Yak before you decided on a plan of action?

He caught the shark 1/2 mile off the beach. I think Bailey used some cut stingray he had hooked the night before as bait...

Right. I got all that. I was just wondering which beach.

Also, was he free-lining or have some other kind of set up?

This is something that I definitely interested in.

Galveston beach, and yes he was free lining! You can catch sharks just like that on any beach in Texas. Just wait until the water temp gets up. Summer time is perfect. We catch 'em like that even wading. Makes it a little more interesting for landing!

Do you use chunks of stingray, whole, filets, or what?

Sorry... Wasn't paying attention it was Galveston Beach ok okay.... It was in front of his home in Jamaica Beach Free Lining behind his kayak or just drifting... He had a steel leader and 9/0 Hook... (Circle) He cut of part of the wing from the sting ray maybe 3" long 2 "wide...

I've also caught a Black Tip on a freshly fileted Croaker... I think Sting Ray works the best Bailey believes in it the problem is keeping them around... You'll usually have to go gig one then freeze it.

I like to use whole small stingray. But if you have a real big one you can definitely cut it up. I have also caught them on croaker, shad, sand trout and even large live shrimp. I highly recommend a circle hook 9/0-15/0.
