Went back out to Jones Lake this weekend to do some flounder fishing. The tides were not ideal for this day, as the strong east wind from the day before really had the water level high.
Winds were much more tolerable, but the tide was still ripping in during the morning which made it difficult to jig along Highlands Bayou. I had to go to plan b and find a much more protected area that had several eddies next to some strong current going into the marsh. I was casting along the edge of the current, and jigged the lure slowly over a mix of mud and shell bottom. Only managed to pick up 1 keeper flounder at this location; however, there were lots of undersized reds and flounder which gave me some action. After making about 50 casts in the same spot, I hooked up with what I thought was a slot red.
Turned out to be a fatty speckled trout, which I released.
Definitely felt bigger when she swam into current.
Around 10:00 AM, the tide starting to slack off, so I paddled back to Highlands Bayou and fished the drop offs where I originally attempted. Current was moving just enough to help suspend my 1/4 oz jighead over the shelly bottom. Quickly caught a few keeper flounder at this location. Grinded out around this area to see what was going on and caught and released 1 more flounder before the incoming tide stopped.
