  • CAT Qualifier - Lake Palestine

Flapper and I fished the Crappie Anglers of Texas Qualifier in Lake Palestine in March.

We started off Friday (pre fishing) working some productive areas and were pulling 1.5lb crappie out of thick brush. The weather was perfect flat calm conditions and sunny. We worked some new areas only finding smaller schools of fish so we made the game plan for Tournament Day.

The plan worked out well for us Saturday we woke to strong north winds and chilly conditions. We knew the fish were there but getting them to bite was another story. We started off the day with a throwback crappie and two break offs in the thick brush.

We landed our first keeper around 8:30 and quickly commenced to land another 4. We now had 5 good fish in the livewell and needed two more.

Over the next 2 hours the bite shut down and we began to worry. We continued working the area and had another 3 break offs before we landed our sixth crappie. Now almost time for weigh in we were missing our 7th fish. Frustrated we kept working the area to no avail. Jamin had a huge crappie on but it wrapped around some brush and was off before the net hit the water.

Discouraged with all the break offs & out of time we loaded the boat and headed to the weigh in.

We arrived and weighed our 6 fish, a 1.433 average for 8.60lbs. Our big fish was 1.65lbs. It was good enough for 3rd place. We needed a 1.18lb crappie to take 1st.

We'll be back next year! We did qualify for the 2 day finals on Lake Lewisville by placing in the top 5 in our division, but doubt we'll enter since it's so far away.

Is a crappie tourney artificial only? Or can you use minnows?
