My tomato plants are out of control and loaded w fruit. I built a raised box that's app 40 ft x 6 ft. It's inside my 50 ft x 100 ft high fenced garden at the ranch. I also have double gates so I can get my tractor in there to work it. Behind the tomato plants are rows of squash, zucchini, peppers (wide variety), eggplant, watermelon, cantaloupe, cherry tomatoes, pumpkins and zinnia flowers( that I cut and bring to the ladies that work in the courthouse up here. In the fall I plant carrots , turnip greens and mustard greens.

It's all about the soil and every year I will haul in Trailor loads so cow manure, leaves, mulch etc. be careful with the manure or your tomatoes could taste like sheet.

WOW! Huge garden . How wonderful . How do you water it ? You must go to the ranch every week to check it for water and bugs ? I would think you would need to check it more than once a week , no ?

Very nice. Elevated gardens with drainage keeps them from getting too much water.

It's below a lake plugger. I have a rock waterfall on the damm of the lake that I circulate water over pumped from the lake that also has a line run to my garden. I have drip irrigation lines that I can use if I need it. I start my plants from seeds in coffee cans most year and then put that in rows. worms have a hard time crawling up over the lip on a can. When the squash and zucchini start blooming I'll spray with seven dust to keep the wasp looking insects from laying eggs in the stems of the plant. And I do go up there at least every week.

Also mass planting helps in case some get weak or die. A man can only eat some much of that anyway. I had a garden in Sugar Land back in about '99 that Kathy Huber came out and did a full page article on. It was a perfect weather year and my plants grew up on my garage roof. I had 30 plants and picked around 200 a day at peak.

Gardening is like fishing and gambling at a casino...it's very therapeutic and your not thinking about another dayem thing in the world when you are doing it.
Thanks FP 420 Root canal and plugger

Beautiful, JT. With all the rain this year, I lost every tomato plant. I might wind up with some okra and a few peppers but everything else just couldn't take it. Very depressing.

Thanks.....ibtsoom that's why I built the box and hauled in 15 loads of topsoil/mulch to raise the elevation. I lost everything last year because of the rain and certainly would have again this year.

By the time I figure in the cost of the fence and all the dirt, my tomatoes are going to cost me around $150 a pound.
