  • Louisiana Bowfishing Question?

I was watching Jr. vs. Sr American Chopper show yesterday, and they were in LA and went bowfishing at night, the first fish that they arrowed was a redfish(the rest were mostly sheepshead), is it legal to shoot redfish with a bow in LA? rs

I thought that same thing when I saw it -- I think those fellas over there pretty much just do whatever the heck they want.

I happened to look it up last night. I wanted to know if it is legal to bow fish for flounder (it is). It is illegal in Texas to take a gamefish with a gig or bow. Flounder are not on the TP&W list of 'gamefish'. It is legal in Louisiana to take reds with a bow.

FYI - here is the list of Texas game fish:
          • Bass: Guadalupe, largemouth, smallmouth, spotted, striped, white, yellow
          • Catfish: blue, channel, flathead
          • Cobia
          • Crappie: black, white
          • Mackerel: king, Spanish
          • Marlin: blue, white
          • Pickerel
          • Red drum
          • Sailfish
          • Sauger
          • Seatrout, spotted
          • Sharks
          • Snook
          • Spearfish, longbill
          • Swordfish, broadbill
          • Tarpon
          • Tripletail
          • Trout: brown, rainbow
          • Wahoo
          • Walleye

It's legal in La. My dad used to talk about the Croatians spearing them. I don't see anything wrong with doing it there. Plenty to go around. Now here? Shouldn't be allowed.

I know it is illegal in Texas, I only thought you could bowfish for roughfish like carp or buffalo, I don't think I have ever seen anyone bowfishing in saltwater---just the brackish bayous. rs

You will see quite a bit of bowfishing done over in the mouth of trinity bay. There is some big gar that come from over there along with some big carp.

I shot a redfish with an in La. M1 once. Blew it's head clean off. Paddled out in my pirogue and fetched it up. It was on the pit in 10 minutes. Not a bad shot at about 60 yards.
