  • Surf Fishing Newb!

So I'm looking at going down to Jamaica beach towards the end of January. I have a friend who does some surf fishing. I am extremely new to surf fishing and usually just wade the surf and fish artificials if I fish it at all. He said he likes to kayak out and drop his cut bait or whatever and then back. Well I have two rigs a Shimano 4000fj spinner on a castaway 6ft 6inch medium, and a Shimano curado 200e5 on an All Star platinum 6ft 6inch rod. Well I know that the reels can handle some heavier test braid (which I have never used) but should I even try? I don't want to ruin my gear obviously. What do you think? Can I do it with what I have or should I get something for the surf? I usually just wade fish the bay and use soft plastics or every now and again some top waters. I dunno I would love to catch some big reds or whatever is hitting the surf when I make it down, but should I just stick to what I know until I get a little heavier gear?

if you dont surf fish much you need to get a cheap surf rod/reel combo from academy.around $30 or $40 probably.if you hook something big it may tear up your smaller rods and reels.good catching to you

academy sells a rod and reel combo made by mako.. its a 8' med/heavy action. Only costs about 35$ i believe. I have two that i use for surf fishing, its a good durable cheap rod and reel that works good in the surf
