  • Old topwater makeovers and a few cheap tricks

I found myself with a few topwaters that I never used anymore. Some were beat up and some were the 99 cent specials from walmart. I bought a few cans of spray paint and some epoxy and got to work. Lemme know what Yall think! And if anyone has a better way to do it feel free to chime in!

Here are the steps incase anyone wants to give it a go.

    1) take off old hooks and split rings
    2) tape off the eyes with blue painters tape
    3) sand off most of the paint and level out any inconsistentcies with a piece of sand paper
    4) clean with alcohol on a rag and let dry
    5) paint with light coats of spray paint and use wire mesh to imitate scales or patterns (I used a piece of an old bug screen from a window)
    6) remove tape / let paint dry and apply a light even coat of epoxy
    7) let epoxy cure and add new split rings and hooks
    8) catch a 30" trout or two 30" trout , either will work fine

and the other soft plastics were the knotty hooker baits I cut and shoved a satwater hook with lead wrapped around it ,then filled the hole back up with silicone. It's like a corky but costs about 1$ Or less each

Fantastic. That really works. I had and old shyster that the blade was rusted. I polished it with sandpaper and used model paint. Colored it several colors, and it caught bass. Great colors and job on the lures. Lord Bless.

Thanks for the nice replies! So far, Ive caught fish on most of them, the short bronze soft plastic didn't have good action in the water though. I'll have to say that that spook Jr with a bone head was on fire the other week. With the added weight of the epoxy, it casts super far, but the added weight doesn't seem to weigh it down in the water. I have new ideas for the second batch. Let me know if anyone has any ideas for some more topwaters! With baits being as expensive as they are, I'll be trying to refrain from buying another topwater for a long long time.
