  • Garden positioning

Well I didn't know this forum had a gardening section. I am a certified organic garden specialist taught by Urban Harvest the utmost authority on Houston and surrounding areas as far as fruit trees and citrus and vegetables are concerned the instructors are all P.H. D's Specializing in there own particular category such as water, soil, horticulture. Etc....

Here is a little info on how to start a garden in an suburb neighborhood.

    Step one observe your yard.
Meaning which way does the sun go across your back yard. What kind of shade do you get from trees. When it rains where I'd the lower spots in your yard.

Step two find the north, south orientation to your pack yard.

Step three is where it gets a little more detailed so I'll have to finish this when I get home.

Step 3 figure out what building material you want to use to build your beds. You are going to want to have an elevated bed in our neck of the woods since our soil does not drain so there are multiple options you can go with for your raised beds.

You can use anything that is 6 inches or over that isn't treated wood. I use 2X8 cedar boards since they are non treated and will last a long time. You can use center blocks, pave stones, cedar pickets, etc. What ever you can afford.

Once you pick your building material decide where you want to put them based on steps one and two. Pick the high spots and make your beds run north south orientation. Once you select the site, mow the grass in that area to the lowest setting on your mower and then try and scalp that area with the weed eater. Make this area about 8 feet wider then your beds are wide so you have walking lanes in between beds.

Once you get that area scalped use card board and cover that area with it. This is the best way to block out the weeds the organic way. I make this whole area weed free this way to make it easier to keep weeds out of my beds. Build your beds on top of the card board and then place garden and flower soil in the beds. I suggest buying this at a dirt yard and not at home depot or lowes. Once the beds are full and you still have card board exposed place mulch onto the remaining card board so you have something to walk on with out ruining that card board.

Steps to get the bed ready will come later.
