Gambling in Texas

Looks like casino gambling is on the docket again. What do you all think? The boon to funding for education in Texas is tremendous if the pols can keep their hands off the money. Galveston developers would no doubt embrace the idea since it is a coastal town with a deep water port and cruise line destination. I am concerned about the effect it would have on our relatively peaceful existence and fishing would probably be afffected with all the new tourists. Just askin'.

Good example is gambling in Detroit, it preys on the less educated and lower income demographic and it hasn't spurred a broad based re-development of their downtown.

The casinos in Louisiana would find some leverage to squash it here.

Cruise lines don't care, they have on-board casinos, and open them in international waters.

Fertitta probably has a lock on developing a casino on the Isle already (if it passes), given his clout, Golden Nugget holding and the family history.

It would create more jobs on the island.

Many of the 'Fathers' of Texas were in debt when our Constitution was written. For that reason, gambling was made illegal in our great State. Making it legal would be a slap-in-the-face to the people who fought for our freedom and our way of life.

I say: Leave Texas/Galveston alone. Go gamble somewhere else. We don't need the problems it would bring.

Gambling would be good for Texas and Galveston. In fact it should be allowed on Padre, Corpus and Galveston. The Houston Bus. Journal recently asked Tilman how long it would take him to get a casino started. His response "15 minutes". The word from an electrical contractor friend is that the Galveston Convention Center (Tilman owns) is prewired for slots already. Between gambling, the extra cruise ship(s) and the cargo traffic from the widened Panama Canal means big things for Galveston. Property valuse will go up as well as the rates owners can get for beach rentals.
