View Full Version : Species Diversity!!!!!!!

We headed out today in search of something different! We werent planning on a meat haul but it sure ended up that way, lol.

Yesterday we beat ourselves up making the beachfront run in the boat from the jetties to San Luis Pass. We threw in a run to a nearshore rig and total made 104 miles with very little to show for it. We had TT and Poons in mind, but the only thing we saw were some TT that were 5" long and one 5# bluefish lol..

Today we decided that the weathermen LIE!!!! So we didnt believe the 6mph forecast and didnt even try it. We had a little fun at the jetties for a while and managed a keeper ling and a throwback ling after breaking off several others including one monster that Kaylin hooked on an Outcast cork with a mullet that she never even had a chance at turning. If someone catches a BIG ling with a green Midcoast outcast hooked to it, its ours, lol.

We ran to the yacht basin to hide for a bit from a storm and when we came out, we decided to stay in the galveston channel for a while because we were tired of getting beat up. We rigged with small kahle hooks and small egg sinkers and did a little vertical fishing around structures with mullet and shrimp. A different kind of fishing for us.

We did pretty darn well though. We had several big fish break us off, saw some cool spadefish and landed quite a variety of fish. We stopped at 10 mangrove snapper and 11 nice trout. We could have limited on trout easily. Kaylin released 4 trout over 4#s/ We also had a couple of small reds and Kaylin had one about 31".

It was great fun and pretty steady action! We ended with a fish fry for the two of us of ling, snapper and the leftover bait shrimp which were HUGE! Yummy!!

Species Diversity included:

sand trout
Mangrove snapper
Speckled Trout

Not a bad day at all. We had a blast!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice fish and I hope you keep the rib cage of the ling, because it is one of the best parts of that fish. If not, the rest of the meat on the ling is great as well!

Thanks for the report, sounds like it was active and more importantly fun.

Oh yeah. Kaylin kept the rib cage to be boiled and turned into fish dip!!!!!!!!!

Man.... Gotta love those Mangrove Snapper... We fished the floating platforms in the Galveston channel last week and caught six nice Mangrove Snappers on some dead peeled shrimp... Kinda like jiggin' for crappie...

Great Catch....
