Fly fished all day with Steve and Curt, who are from Austin and Oklahoma respectively. It was a fun day with a very tough set of conditions. In the morning, launching the boat was the first challenge. The water at Fat Boys was non existent, mud on either side of the pier and barely enough in the trough to idle the boat out.
We ran carefully to a protected spot in a dredged channel where we could fish out of the wind. We repeated the same basic controlled drift all day long. I didn't have many choices given that there was in the range of 3-4 feet of water blown out of the bay. We caught fish on every single drift, mostly trout. We threw Clouser minnows in Chartreuse and white all day, and landed 9 trout to 17 inches, and two very small flounder. There was no sight casting to be found today, but we did catch fish all day.
The guys were a blast to fish with as they had a bet on who would catch the most fish, and the back and forth banter was hilarioius. This was their very first trip in saltwater, and they had a great time. It was a fun day, just no opportunities to find fish shallow. The picture is Curt Jones with the best trout of the day at 17 inches.
