I've been fishing nearshore/offshore galveston and freeport for the last 15+ years. Seen 1 sailfish in that time. Only caught them in Mexico and Florida, and that's with a guide. Friday we're tied to a rig, weeding thru little snapper, feeding the porpoise. Kingfish rigs floating in the current 40 yards back. One rod goes off and this sail starts greyhounding for 200 yards....peeling line. It's a firedrill. (its me and 3 teenage boys on the boat!) Have to unhook from the rig, bring in the bottom rods, all with 13inch snapper attached, etc. I'm barking orders and with half the reel empty, the chase begins. 15 minute fight and this fish is tired. It's a good size one too, every bit of 6 foot. We pull along side, grap it by the bill and take a few pictures. Then revive and release. What a thrill to catch and then have swim free! Feel blessed by the fishing gods, or just damn lucky. I'll take it either way.
