Made a morning fishing trip to the upper Galveston Bay area to see if the flounder were still stacked up in the usual spots. Overall, the flounder were scattered, but action was consistent to keep me fishing all morning.
Launched my kayak around sunrise and paddled through a pretty stiff northeast wind that eventually laid down by mid morning. Water temperature actually felt kind of cool which surprised me, I guess from all of the rain recently. Tide was incoming most of the morning and slacked up before noon.
Started off the morning throwing pearl white Gulp pogys on 1/4 oz jighead along pier pilings in 4 feet of water and over scattered shell nearby. Water clarity was decent (~1 foot) despite the northeast winds. Had to really slow down my retrieve for the flounder to hit the lure. In fact, most of the flounder I caught today nailed the lure while I was dead sticking. They would nail it during the brief pause (~3 seconds) between each bounce of the lure. Picked up a limit of flounder in this area.
The bite slowed down, so I paddled over to some rip rap along the shoreline and tried targeting larger flounder along a deep drop off from 3 to 10 feet. Switched over to a red and white H&H curly tail grub tipped with a Gulp pogy. Picked up few nice flounder in the 18"-21" range by casting the lure parallel to the riprap and working the lure back along the top edge of the drop off. Most of the flounder were tight along the transition of rock to mud bottom in about 5 feet of water.
The tide slacked up around 11:00 AM and it started getting hot once the clouds cleared up. The bite really slowed down later in the morning, so I called it a day.
Definitely looking forward to fall and the cooler weather!
