  • No fish in D-Canal

Took my son-in-law Coach Pete G., Lamarque football coach out this morning before he has to get back to work to introduce him to lure fishing. I was honestly fretting the north at 20-30 but felt I should keep my word so we put in the diversinary canal and went out towards Jones. Made four stops between the pipeline and Harbourwalk bridge and picked up four jug trout, three rat reds, and three flounder. Only 1 keeper flat but all in all a fun time. Started him out slow rolling silver spoons and had him double pumping Strawberry hogies by the end of the day. He ended up catching 2 rats and a flounder. He wanted to take off work tomorrow to go again. Ha! I don't think I'll have much trouble getting him to put those golf clubs up when I call. I'd like to take the opportunity to thank J.Gonzales (flatbottom) for introducing me to a first class welder and gentleman who fixed me up with some pontoons to float my outboard.

Yep, an ol' timey name for small schoolies, kind of like calling Lady Fish "horse mackerel".

I'd guess 5-6' on low tide. Good hit or miss protected spot on a stiff north wind. Never caught any big fish there but good numbers at times.

My grandad called small school trout jug trout. Best I can recall, the length limit was 12" and the bag limit 20 (late 70s). I thought he called them jug trout because they all got fileted and frozen in cleaned out milk cartons (or jugs). No idea if that's right or not.

Once again sir, I'm impressed with your old school knowledge of terminology. Mr. Vernon Perkins (Perkins Marine) chocolate bayou -bay legend is where I picked up the term. He'd call a small male a Buck trout. Nevertheless I remember when 12" was a keeper and rat reds could the harvested. Fish are like cattle to the tastebuds, I'll trade a old cow for the freezer for a young cow any day. I strictly comply with size limits and numbers but often wonder with all the restrictions where the numbers are with fish nowadays as opposed to "back in the day".
