  • Trolling the canals? Seriously?

Co-worker owns a home in Jamaica Beach. He swears he's seen 2 different boats over the last 2 weekends trolling the main channel, one even landing and measuring a trout. Has anyone heard or tried this? I was at first imagining someone bumping along for flounder, but no...this is with the motor running thru the canal at canal speed pulling lures of some sort. I've never seen it, but the larger main canal in Jamaica makes it very doable.....might be a whole new trend in bay fishing - hope not!

There is a member on this board who's GF was probably the one doing it. Not gonna mention him unless he comes on here, but I heard it works....

Never done it from a boat, but I do it all the time from the kayak. Usually leave it 30 or so behind the yak and paddle to my spot. I stop every once in a while to let the soft plastic sink. Leave the drag real loose to let the fish take the bait. I've done really well doing that.

My dad and a friend used to troll the north jetty and catch trout like that, except they used the outboard. Been more than a few years, but it can be done...

When drift fishing out of the kayak, I have caught many fish with my lure fluttering in the water when I am putting a fish on the stringer. That's always fun.

they troll the ICW in Florida for trout all the time.
the fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad.

Ive trolled the ICW a couple of times to no avail. It is more of a social thing in the summer.
