  • Birds saved me from being skunked

I launched from 2004 bridge and got to my spot before sunrise. I wanted to do some wading at a reef that was going to be protected. Conditions were perfect nice cool morning, good water color, protected from east wind, but NO FISH. I fished all over the reef shallow and deep they just werent there. I called it quits and was ready to go home. On my way in i saw only 3 birds diving and decicided to try a drift. I pulled up a nice size sand trout right away. I managed 4 nice keeper specks and lots of dinks and sand trout. I was drifting the same spot even though the birds were gone the fish still hung around. Birds saved the day for me. I still want to try and find the big girls wading. All fish were released.

Dude, I'll fish one bird if I have to.

I am glad you didn't get skunked.

Similar thing happened to me today. Decided to go fish a channel and was looking over and noticed a bird looking down. I trolled over and saw another bird looking, then another, shrimp jumped out of the water, then I caught one trout....lol Had to drift around a bit to pick up 2 more. One of them was the fatest 19 incher I ever caught. I thought it was a red at first.

I set my hook like I am fishing for tuna even if I am fishing for trout. Call me tuna Joe!

Thanks for the replies. I got a few questions and dont know in which section to ask them, so im just going to ask them here. When is the best time to target the birds specifically? Is there a best time of day they will work the most? Im thinking they work the most on a good outgoing tide but not sure. Everytime i run into them its mostly accidental.

Always look for the birds, but know they won't always be there. When you see them working, hit that spot. Otherwise, you're on your own.
