  • Trying Something New

This weekend for the tournement I want to try something different. We have mostly fished with live bait, and will continue to do so, but I picked up a container if GULP 3" shrimp this week. So other than the finger mullet and live shrimp from Lutes, would anyone be willing to chime in on the best method for using the GULP, and maybe some rigging techniques? I want to transistion to using more plastics but the live shrimp has always worked well.

Any thought's or comments's would be appreciated.

I use the Gulp quite a bit. Typically I just tie on a jig head and work the lure a few different ways. Usually use a 1/8 or sometimes a 1/4 oz jig head, just depends on how fast you want it to drop. The action is up to you, it's fun to learn what movements work.

You can free line it or use a jig head. With a jig head you can bump it off the bottom, drag it or pop it like shrimp. The weight of the jig head will determine where you can work it in the water column. You can also put them on a leader and dangle them under a popping cork. They're a great transition from bait.

Take the loudest popping cork you own.
        Make a 18-24" leader
Tie a 3/8 oz jig head on bottom, and use a stinky gulp

Toss out in less than 3' of water, while drifting .... constantly pop and reel, pop and reel

This is a big technique of number of redfish tournament anglers

        BTW
Use BAAD Marine jig heads and you won't loose tournament fish .... I lost 3 big reds on Norton jig heads last year alone ... the reds bent the hook!

          3/8 seems heavy.

I'll be using hot dogs on a treble hook. Gotta keep your eye on the prize.
