  • Hard Starting and Other Minor Problems

So my 30 hp Mercury 2-stroke has been acting up a little lately. We got up to duck hunt and it took us about 30 mins to get it started and running good. This is after running it the day before. Also, sometimes when it starts it sounds like it is running on one cylinder. After it gets started and warm, it runs good. Also, it died on me a couple of times just idling. What can I do about these problems? Can I do it myself? Thanks.

    P.S. it's a 2001 model if that helps.

Have you checked the spark plugs? Start with easy stuff first.

I was going to replace those first. I just need to get the boat home so I can work on it!

Might be a plug wire also.

Also, sometimes when I gave it gas it would hesitate and then pick up and go.

Could be E10 fouling up your fuel system.

I had the same problem with my Tohatsu 15hp. Pain to start and idle sucked. It only ran good when I could open up the thottle. Evans Marine cleaned up the carb and now I am popping wheelies in the jon boat.
