My uncle has never caught a fish in the winter, so I decided to change that today. We launched at 9 o'clock this morning and paddled towards Trinity. While the water was still fresh, I knew of a few deep holes that the fish like to stack up in after a rain. The first hour or so we caught and released a few undersized specks and rat reds. Then the tide changed and started rushing in. In the middle of the hole I could see shrimp start jumping and figured some reds were getting hungry. I told my uncle to cast past it. First cast and BAM! The drag starts peeling and that only reinforced my belief it was a red. Then that yellow mouth came up...wait a minute. It was a huge trout! It have a few headshakes and peeled more drag. Eventually he netted the fish. It went a tad over 27 and 6.8 on the boga, a PB for him. After some quick pics, we released it. After keying in on fleeing shrimp, we ended the day with 8 trout, all over 19 inches. I think that smile says it all! Were using hackberrys on 1/4th oz jigheads.
