Labor Day weekend has always been what I consider to be the beginning of peak redfish season on the Upper Texas Coast. The marsh is primed with high water and filled to the brim with shrimp, waiting to be flushed out into the main bay with the passing of each fall front. But there's no reason to wait for the water to drop or clear, as the redfish usually begin their annual feast in the far reaches of the backcountry long before becoming easily accessible at the big name areas of the bays. And with the holiday madness, what better place to be?
Having the opportunity to take Baron from IFLY out on the skiff this weekend, we did it right and decided to fish a different bay each day, starting in Sabine and working our way back to West Bay. This year was no exception, with each location that we fished being chock full of redfish... big redfish for that matter, with some even being oversized. And after a long weekend of not seeing another boat in sight, we almost forgot about the crowded boat ramps that we left behind.
