  • Smacks in the surf...

RC called me around 9 this AM and he had just boxed a big smack on a gold spoon in the surf around 300 yds this side of the MOB. I decided to take a non-refundable day off and run down and join him. He was obviously holding his mouth better than me cause he ended up with 7 and me 0. Around noon we left there and went between 4 & 5 at Surfside. Still pretty water but no action. I swam to the 3rd bar (still a little cold but not real bad) and nothing there either. Good to fish with RC, got a little exercise and now have a real sunburn (as opposed to my usual barroom sunburn). The water felt around 68 today; I'm thinking 3 weeks before real spec action to begin.

Thanks. Was wishing I could have been out there. Seemed the wind picked up quicker than expected.

The bait and the trout are showing up at the passes, it won't be long now.

            Not much to add.
I got to the MOB right before sunrise.
Caught the tail-end of the outgoing tide.
River was full of large shad.
I thought about trying for reds there, but with the flat surf and incoming tide I opted to move there to see if any trout were hungry.
No trout, but the smacks were willing to peel off some drag.
Ended up with 8 on a gold 3/4.

Beach driving to the river was as good as I've seen it.
A few more sunny days to warm the water and it should be a good surf trout year there.

            Good fishing with you Pat.
            I got sunburned too.

Well, after putting on his PFD and swam to the 3rd bar, I'd say he's ready for the next Iron Man competition.
                    He had a purdy good cadence going to, "D#*m it's cold, D#* it's cold, D#*m it's cold!!!"

While we were fishing off the 2rd bar, he had a rather large smack hit his spoon right at the end of his retrieve.
For a moment, with all the splashing going on, I thought a shark got him.

just missed you in SS, I left about 1230. no bites on live mullet but the birds were working a little farther out than I could get. water temp was in the 70's. lol
the fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad.
