  • Making A Wade Tomorrow

    Good morning gents,

I posted in the newbie forum a few months back and was greeted with the warm welcome. Instead of asking a ton of questions that have already been asked and answered by many of you, I went ahead and scoured the forum because I figured many of the questions I had, already have been answered. I even read the "Top Water Bible" by AquaPimp as well as the link that informs you how to use TTF products and when to throw them. I usually wade/fish alone since most of my friends either stick to hunting or golf, which of course is mostly what I do as well. Here recently I am finding myself finding a new love for fishing in general. I have a select few that fish but find it hard to make the time. I guess what I am asking is; is it safe to wade alone? Even though I do it, I am not sure if it's worth the risk in case something does happen. I am thinking abut making a wade tomorrow morning. Not quite sure what spot yet. I heard the flounder are killing it at SeaWolf Park.

I do wade alone on occasion but its rare. Never wade SLP alone, and if you ever wade anywhere alone, wear a PFD. Seawolf should be ok since a lot of people are there looking for flounder. Good luck!

x100 on the PFD! Head to Seawolf and you should get yourself some flounder.

PDF is overkill IMO. Just don't go running into an area you don't know. San Luis Pass (SLP) is a place I would NEVER wade alone, but West Bay is pretty safe. Most of the wading places will give you a warning before you get too deep. I'm catching fish relatively shallow, so you don't need to get deep right now. Seawolf at this time of year is a zoo, so there will be plenty of hands if you find yourself in trouble.

Garret, I also wade alone a lot. I don't wear a pfd usually, but my favorite carry along when I'm by myself is a collapsable wading staff. It's long enough that I can check areas ahead of me or use it to stabilize myself if I slip. I have gone out to new areas alone but I'm just a lot more circumspect that normal.
Give it a shot but be careful.

Gulfcoast13; Good call on the PDF @ SLP. I have been out there before and I can see where it can get dangerous if you don't know what you are doing.
Troutwader; I heard it's a zoo around this time w/ people looking for flounder. If I get there early enough maybe I can avoid it. If it becomes too much I will go somewhere else.
Curmudgeon; I saw that when someone posted "Show your wade setup" you had said something about the collapsible wade staff. I am going to look into that.

Now I just need to get out there and grind it out/put my time in and learn the areas. Hopefully the weather holds up and I can report back to you guys with some pictures. I truly appreciate your guys input.

PFD wading the bay? Are you chitin' me? I fish alone most of the time, and most of that is wading. I do wear an auto-inflatable PFD running the boat when I'm wearing waders. The Mrs. says it'll make it easier to find the body!

It's probably more of a security blanket than anything else, but I like it when I'm alone. I find mine used on eBay and ive been pretty happy with it. For that matter, my Patagonia wading boots and a shimano wading belt are from ebay as well. You can find some bargains if you're patient.
