Teal Hunting Q's

A few questions for ya'll who hunt teal during the early season...

-Do you set out only teal dekes with no big ducks?

-What criteria do ya'll use to choose a spot? Shallow/deep water? Windward/lee shoreline? Would you set up in a protected "pocket"/cove, or rougher open water?

-As far as W. Bay goes, are they more plentiful on the N. shore, or can you get on them good on the S. shore as well?

-I'm guessing scouting before the first day of season helps. Do ya'll just drive around your spots and look for moving flocks or birds on the water?

I use mostly Teal decoys, but I use a dozen Pintail decoys too. Scouting is always good but remember that they fly around and if you have a few decoys out, chances are that they will see them.

Be sure that you have your teal tags.....

Do you have any extra Teal tags.

I went to Acacemy in Corpus Christi and they were only issuing 32 tags per customer. If you hunt every day, you can shoot 64 Teal. The tags are good for shooting Teal between the early Teal Only Season and the regular duck season.

I am looking for some extra tags......Anyone????

i mix my decoys. with wind at my back or across my decoys ... i like back marsh areas and what is teal tags i have not read that

teal tags ? its a federal water fowl stamp. covers all ducks no such thing as a teal tag

I tie half decoys on front of the keel other half on the rear of the keel. Weighted keels will right themselves if thrown wrong or upside down on their side etc. I use 2 doz teal, 1 doz pintail 1 doz puddler pack which have gadwall, bluebill and widgeon. I throw out a few susies and drake mallards to fill in holes. Keep teal in pods near you and bigger ducks scattered out to edges. You need to provide a pocket or runway with your dekes to allow ducks a place to land. You have to take into account wind dirrection etc ducks normally land into wind...

That's what I've heard, you want them coming in right in front of you, into the wind. The one time I hunted we did better after the wind switched into our faces, but that could have just been the front stirring them up.

Or just got with me every Saturday & Sunday. I can take a bunch of hunters as long as you don't mind sitting on a marsh seat in full camo... Can only take 4 on boat.
