  • Who's got an AR??

Looking to buy one (5.56 mm, .223) and don't know anything about them. I was looking at a S&W MP15 Optics ready at Gander. It's on sale for I think $800. There are so many different manufacturers and it's a little overwhelming. I don't need top of the line. I just want something that shoots that's not a piece of junk and is dependable. I don't want to spend more than a grand, preferably less. Anything to look for or watch out for?

I hope I catch a 10 lb trout before I catch a flesh eating bacteria.

    just found this:
Cheaper Than Dirt! is America's Ultimate Shooting Sports Discounter, and we live up to that title. Expect bulk ammo deals, discount firearms, parts to build your next gun and more.

might be worth it to spend a little extra. read some good stuff about SIGs

I went a different route and got a Saiga 223. It isn't as accurate as an AR but it doesn't jam, never. Guess it depends on what you are looking to use it for.

You will probably have more fun and know more about the gun if you build a kit... With a kit gun, you get exactly what you want.

The S&W made AR's are good to go. It will serve you well.
Rock River, Colt, Bushmaster, Del-Ton are all good to go production guns.
There are a boat load of boutique AR builders like BCM, LaRue, CMT, Spikes Tactical and others that make extremely good AR's but they all cost way over $1K.

Avoid like the plague anything Olympic Arms or Century International Arms.

PM me if you wish to discuss further.

i have an armalite with a 6.8 spc upper. much more power behind that bullet than a .223, might want to look into that. easily takes down pigs and deer with no problem. ammos a little more expensive. id like to get a RRA predator pursuit upper soon though.

You need to consider a few things 1st

              - Barrel length 16 or 20"
              - Flat top for optics
              - type of optics - We got a entry level scope called "Super Sniper" sold out of Dallas
16" is good for tacticle, close qters., and some plinking

20" is good for varmit shooting, serious plinking, and is geared to more of a hunter

We have a RRA 20" predator ..... it's got the goodies on it, and is a serious go getter.

I like to shoot hogs, and yotes ....and would like to one day take it praire dog-ing

There is a local maker that gets over looked alot
              High Standard
You have to buy it from a FFA upon request .... call Republic Arms

High Standard has some pricing on it's web-site

Watch the 2cool classifieds ,they come up on there every month or so

Ammo is not an issue for the .223 anymore

I havent gotten on the forum in a while because school's been keeping me busy.....

But cool! thanks everyone for the input. Muddskipper, I didn't even think about barrel length. I definitely want 20 in. so I can hunt with it.

High standard looks like a cool site. Going to do some more research....

well I did some reading and a lot of people (not everyone of course) say that a 16 in. barrel is fine under 150 yds. I like the idea of the collapsible butt stock and more compact rifle. plus it just looks cool

                      That is very true.

I have 2 AR's and they are great at opening up on large herds of hogs. You can drop shoats but not much anything bigger.

I have a pre-Regean one also and its a helluva lot better than the Bushmaster I have.

                            But question....

With the optics ready, can you still mount iron sights? Either flip up or front post mount? I don't want to be limited to only optics
