  • Life Jackets soon to be required...

BoatUS Magazine, the largest boating magazine in the US, provides boating skills, DIY maintenance, safety and news from top experts.

Looks like Feds are trying to pass a law stating ANY person operating or on a boat less than 18' in length will have to wear a life jacket regardless of age.

I wear mine regardless... DO YOU?

No I don't, but I do wear an auto-inflatable in the winter when I'm running wearing waders.

I only have a yak so I use one all the time. I might turtle and drown in 6" of water!

Anytime I wear waders on the boat I have one on.

and you stiil dont have to wear a helmet on a motorcycle! how many people die from head injuries compared to drowning falling out of a boat?
the fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad.

Freakin' Feds. I wear mine when conditions warrant. It's called common sense. They pass that law and I'll rack up the tickets.

I'm firmly against nanny laws (seatbelts, life jackets, etc.) I don't wear one but I'm never far from it.

I undertand that Parks and Wildlife have to go searching for bodies that they normally wouldn't if that person had been wearing their jacket, but this is America and we should be able to think for ourselves. We don't need more laws governing us. Especially nanny laws.

Now children are another story. In most cases they aren't able to make educated decisions and that's where their parents come into paly. But if an adult doesn't want to wear his seat belt, etc. then that's his choice.

There are more people who drown from swimming or wading in water that from a boat, so they should make it that anyone on or in water has to wear one if they pass any law, why just boaters?

I would be curious to see the drowning numbers from San Luis Pass vs drownings from Galveston Bay boating accidents.
