  • Bama rig.

I decided to make a Alabama rig to just see how it looked, but I modified to my liking. I put J-hooks on the outer rigs so I could thread the lure up and hide the hook eye and then the center is a dual lock snap to put the jig head for the right situation. Plus it gives that extra advantage of throwing 5 different colors at the same time.

They use it for bass. The bass pro's are starting to throw it. I'm going to have to check and see if it is legal to use in this state and then I will try it for specks, flounder, and reds. It's suppose to resemble a school of bait fish. We'll see. I think it looks a lot like a daisy chain but in a smaller package.

Figures I can under stand working a dual speck rig. But 5 baits sucks to be you if you hook up on all 5

I received an offshore fishing catalog in the mail yesterday and it has some stuff that looks like that. I just didn't know if we used that around here.

Just read a story on the bama rig being thrown at the Texas Bass Classic at Lake Conroe so it's legal. They have to follow state rules in B.A.S.S. sanctioned tournaments.

I can see that. People use the Carolina rig on that lake a bunch. It's because there is not a lot of structure so they would seem to work also. What structure is there is mainly man made.

I would throw it just to be able to tell a story if I caught a fish on it. I don't think I would throw it very much if I didn't have success. I am glad there are inovators out there, I would have stopped at a Johnson Sprite.

It's legal-called an umbrella rig offshore.

For offshore trolling, an umbrella rig is usually used "unarmed" that is, without hooks. This is meant to resemble a small school of ballyhoo (popular), squid, flying fish, or bait. We'll run one right off the stern in the prop-wash about 20 feet back. Many have two spreader arms on them.

Variations are used for West Coast fishing such as for halibut, where the umbrella rig is often armed, called hoochies. These are often made with 150# mono leader and a single titanium spreader bar. They also have a variant called a dredge, which has a cannonball weight on it for "bottom thumping."

The dredge and some umbrellas have no spreader bar on them. The inshore crowd such as bass fishermen invented the "Bama Rig" that has been used for years offshore as a daisey chain, teasers, hoochies, and so forth. For inshore, the stuff is miniaturized, of course.

For example, you might see a flounder rig with a plastic on a jig head, sometimes with a red or pink feather, followed by a very small spoon or spinner blade known as a drogue, and a second hook after that. The metal drogue makes the second lure fop around in a way that certain fish find hard to resist.

The only thing I don't like about umbrellas, dredges, and the Bama is their ability to foul and I mean get fouled in a mess of a knot either in your tackle box, on the bottom, or if you catch a fish (watch the "stinger" treble hooks if you got any). The idea of a second stinger lure is a great idea for short hitters though ... we do it for king mackerel all the time.

Oh and I really don't know what I'm talking about other than I can foul the **** out of 'em!

this is the equivalent to the guy at the end of the pier soaking dead bait on ten different rods. Seems like a lot of time, energy, and money wasted if you lose this rig. But don't forget to spray some teriyaki bang sauce on each lure before you go out.

Interesting but I think I'll try one of these instead.
