Was lucky enough to finish finals last Thursday as my dad asked if I wanted to come with him to Los Angeles. Can't turn down a free trip! Called up my cousin in LA to find out he was charter master for a 2 day rock fishing trip and he had one more slot open. I'm gone! My dad had a conference to go to and I went off to the landing to meet up with everyone. We left Friday night at 9 PM and slept in the bunks. Woke up at St. Nicks Island, the furthest of the island chains in California, and started fishing. We were drifting live sardines for halibut, but unfortunately they just weren't out there at the moment. We changed our game plan and concentrated on rock fish the rest of the day.
We started off with deep drops at 200 feet. I was using a 10 oz jig and curly tail grub on a double dropper loop rig. It was pretty stupid easy once your jig hit the sea floor. BAM FISH ON! Basically cranked the fish back up to the surface. I also caught a few ling cod that were pretty awesome to catch as well. I had 3-4 UFO's on the trip where I gave a hit a hook set, but the fish was too heavy or fought to much to pull out of the rocks. At some point, it became so easy, we started using gummy worms as bait. Worked just as well too! Between drops, we had an awesome chef who provided us with great food. For the price of $299, we got to fish a boat below the usual capacity of 32 (we had 25 anglers on board) and with food provided with a $20 fuel surcharge. Do we have anything like that in Galveston?
After I got back, I spent a day resting my aching muscles. Rock fishing was quite the workout. My cousin came home from work and asked if I wanted to go bass fishing. Another fishing trip? That's a no brainer! Left the next morning to meet a friend of his. After an hour or so drive, we arrived at Diamond Valley Lake. It was a beautiful lake nestled between a bunch of rolling hills and mountains. Weather wise, the day called for rain, but that didn't deter us. Launched at 6 and we were off to our first spot. Using drop shot rigs, we were fishing cliff faces at around 18 feet of water. The lake itself is pretty deep with it being more than 150+ ft deep in some areas. This was totally new style of fishing for me and I had trouble catching on especially since the fish were finicky and had a very soft bite. After my cousin and his friend caught a few, I eventually caught on and went on a hot streak. Initially there wasn't any size to them (about 1-3 lbs), but we came across a pocket of 4-5 lbers and everyone hooked up. We ended up leaving at 1 to beat the afternoon traffic. All in all, it was an awesome trip!
