  • Ray guards?

The wading-gear post mentioned ray guards and Google showed some -- for a price. But I'm nothing if not adaptable (and cheap), so I think I'll made my own. But I've got to ask how thick or hard do you know the material need to be to defeat a barb?

Probably about the thickness and hardness of Sch 40 PVC. Sch 10 may be thick enough. Strap some irrigation pipe to your leg.

Most stingray hits are in the foot and ankle, so the boots you wear are important. I don't worry about rays as much in the winter...
The Foreverlast guards are cheap, but you get what you pay for. My old Wind River guards, were the best you could buy. They were identical to the Crackshot guards but about 3" taller. I wear Crackshots now.

I wish an entrepreneur would make a pair of rayguard boots built like snake boots. For never last boots don't hold up to shell and are heavy but there aren't many choices out there. For lack of better options its For never last reef boots and crack shot guards for me. Lucky to get one year out of the boots if you are wading shell.

I normally go through one pair of boots in the summer and one in the winter - I probably should try another brand besides everlast. I generally only wear my guards in the spring and summer ( I'll probably be sorry for that one day though). I bought a pair of ray shields a few years back on eBay and they've held up remarkably well. Pretty sure they're made by everlast as well and they just strap on over your boots.

I wear the Crackshot Ray Guards. The Green ones at the bottom of the page.
Been wearing them for years. They have a Lifetime Warranty.

Do the guards cover the back of your legs? I'm looking at stirrup shin guards on eBay for 7 and shin pads for 5 to slip in to cover the backs of my legs. That ough to work under waiders.

they will just weight you down, walk slow and drag your feet. that's what I have done for 30yrs. even worse with waders, better wear a good pfd!
the fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad.

Yep they do - an they're not cumbersome at all in the water.

But you wear them OVER your Stingray Boots and Waders.

Never wore them either. Haven't done any research on rays, but had the good fortune of spending about six hours talking to Mrs. Cookie Pepper one day while we were attending the jamacia beach church bazaar. Lloyd was inside taking orders on custom rods and I was outside peddling my inherited carnival glass collection. Mrs. Cookie hung out with my girlfriend and i and we talked about life experiences and a lot about fishing. The subject of stingrays came up and her take was that rays breed in late fall and become very aggressive. I've walked into bird island cove in gin clear water in December one year and saw so many I freaked out. My son-in-law stepped on one in jumbile a couple years ago and the barb went through the top of his leather tennis shoe and came out the sole. This young man works out with his high school football team and is very athletic but I had to pack him to the truck with my old worn out arse. As I get older I'm less inclined to wade. I've said it before, I'm glad I have a boat. I get the fact of going in stealth and catching a big one but after that experience with the s-i-l my odds of getting tagged have increased substantially. Now as far as the surf, and they're out there too, I will walk in bare footed. I guess it's a mind over matter thing. You don't mind, it don't matter.

By the way, shuffling the feet will spook them but their are those that like to follow your mud trail. Never walk backwards.
