  • Best bait when fish are feeding on rain minnows?

Last Saturday the fish in the bayous were feeding heavy on rain minnows. Couldn't find any live bait except mud minnows, but they wouldn't eat them for nothing. Also couldn't get them to eat Gulps, tops, minnow imitations or soft plastics... they had lock jaw, but were ripping up the water all around.

Very frustrating... Any suggestions on what I should be throwing? Headed back out tomorrow.

Rain minnows? Heard of GLASS minnows. There are a lot of baby shad and glass minnows in the bays right now, but they are so small that I don't know of an imitation bait for them. Best bet is a small spook top water for trout early and late. We have been catching fish on small plastics (SW Assassins) fished aggressively with 1/4 oz jigheads.. Good luck!

      Thx

It's what I hear everybody calling 'em... could be dusky anchovies, menhaden, glass minnows or? More about the schools of bait making nervous water... looking like it's raining.

Maybe smaller plastics would be better... don't normally go small.

What about small spoons or spinner baits?

That would be my recommendation. Small spoon. Something else worth a try is the small (1/4oz) rattle-trap. I think they call it the mini-trap.

tandem rigged glow shads. Buy them all ready rigged or rig your own. I like making my own with 100% floro leader material. Or the 1/8oz rat-l-trap. Sometime s a real small spoon under a popping cork.

take a pearl fatboy and fish the outside of the bait ball.

There are usually Flounder under those raindrops too. Tip that tandem rig with little pieces of shrimp.

I was thinking there had to be some trout in there... Headed to Academy after work to pick up a few things.

Yep, this is the first I've ever heard glass minnows called rain minnows, but there's lots of names for things here I can't get used to. I'm still calling whiting "channel mullet" and sand trout "White trout". There have been HUGE hatches of glass minnows this year, more than I've ever seen, and every fish has been FULL of them.

Tandem speck rig in white, or a small plastic jig with glitter.
