I will go out on a limb and guess that the OP was referring to the lingcod of the Pacific NW, also called a ling up there.
At least its similar as a bottom-dwelling ambush predator. Cause that thing does not resemble a cobia in the least.
Always seem to see a lot of fish ID threads this time of year. I guess way more folks bouncing jigs and mullet on the bottom means more lizardfish, oyster toads, sea robins, and stargazers pulled out.
