  • Lizard Fish Infestation

Has anyone else noticed an increase in the Lizard Fish population in West bay? They seem to be everywhere, and will hit a jig or Corky.

I have caught more in the last couple years that the ten years prior. Fish a lot more now - figured it was due to that but maybe not. I'll ask my dad if he's seeing any more on the shrimp boat. Shrimpers call them cigar fish.. Due to their looks I suppose.

Might be why the Ladyfish have not been caught as much! haven't caught one all year. Last year they were thick.

All those Lizard Fish are eating something, competing with other species for that forage, and reducing the food source for those species. I think I'll contact Lance @ TP&W and ask a few questions.

Went shrimping with the old man today Kenny and I've honestly never seen so many lizard fish. Some were pushing 15 or 16" long. We were in the Galveston harbor.

Seems like you see more of them this time of year. My old dad was a commercial fisherman too and he called them cigar fish. Haven't caught any this year but one day last winter Bruce and I whacked them in Dana's.

Just the old standard shrimp trawl - he's 82 and he's been shrimping since he was a teenager. He's got a 60 ft shrimp boat called the Capt. Gerald after my first kid. His deck hand needed the day off Sat so I went with him.

Are those the fish that have the gecko spots and triangle mouth full of tiny sharp teeth?
