ON 2cool there is a long discussion on what ML will charge. Here is the question for our resident corky big trout experts.
How would the hook up ratio go if you went to single hooks that had the same weight set up on a corky? It is not like a top water walking along most of the time.
How would it affect the shell hook up ratio?
We catch a lot of fish off plastics with single hooks so how would it differ or change the action if you had the same weight set up and a Gam #1 or # 2hook off two split rings?
Know it would save some fish using corky devils.
On Topwaters I have tried other hooks/ bigger and lighter wt and still the Gam heavy hooks for me seem to hang down better where the lighter hooks can get displaced and not hook up.
Being an old time kayaker I have had my share of exciting times out with a mirror lure or spook with 9 hooks and a pissed of fish in the kayak with me and on occasion had a 200 lb mullet caught for a double.
We were down South after FishSmart showed McBride what they had found using single hooks. Matter of fact FS has two boxes of identical topwater baits. One with trebles and one with single hooks on his topwaters.
I cheat since I like spook jrs most of the time. I use a single #1 gam on the back not to pick up grass and a good treble on the front which gives you the best of both worlds. This seems to be a good compromise most of the time for me even in E Maty when the grass starts floating.
I was bored one night several years ago and did sit down and weight out all the different hooks and split rings used by the companies whose baits that I use. Interesting to go out and look at all your bait's actions in a pool. Yes it is freshwater but watch the action on two different baits right out of the package before and after changing the hooks out too. Lot of those sinking baits seem to have a little different action. May be why that old beat, up eat up, bait that you love so much looks the way it does.
Single hooks on corkys?
