  • Catching Live Bait

Looking for some ideas on where to get live bait, (mullets, shad, mud minnows, piggies, etc..) with a cast net. We see people on the side of 45 near Bayou vista but don't know if there are other place. We are looking to fish and want to see what ideas y'all have for places, or general ideas of what to look for when trying to get live bait.

We have been successful with the cast net in some cuts as the tides move water by watching for bait on the water.

Any experience you want to share would be appreciated.

any small muddy cut running up into the marsh grass should hold a couple of mullet, mud minnows, and probably pin perch. That will get you started. Shad / menhaden are much harder to find and you have to be mobile usually to find the schools of them.

San Luis Pass has always produced well for me. Bay side on an outgoing tide.
