  • Something very big in my canal light

    Hey guys
So I'm standing on the upper deck about 11pm and watching a few fish swim in and around the light. Several where big reds that went well over 29" but then... very slowly and ominously a behemoth cruised right in the middle of it. No it was not a gar. It was a fish.. and it went 5-7 ft in length because I got at least 3 good looks at it. Do Tarpon get into our canals this time of year and have any of you seen one that big in West? This has been happening on a very low tide. Any thoughts on what species it could be?

I would think the water is way too cold for a tarpon. Are you near the pass?

I'd bet gar every time. But you said it's not one. Get a pic of the silhouette if you can.

Tarpon should have all migrated to warmer waters at this point unless he's just lost. I'm at a loss. Gar is the most probable - Ling is even possible but again - should be in warmer waters at this point. Black drum?
        Shut up and FISH!!

I was testing my scuba gear, thanks for not shooting.

Juvenile tarpon stay inshore but that seems too big to be a juvenile.
Last night I saw a picture of over a dozen juvenile tarpon in flowerbluff that died in the freeze

I have seen large "bull red sized" reds in my light on occasion and also some very big gar in the 5-6 foot range. I have heard stories of big sharks occasionally wondering into the canals, but I would think that silhouette would be pretty easy to spot. My bet would have been on a big ***** gar, simply because I see them not infrequently. Not sure what else it could be. I am going down this evening and will certainly be checking my lights

It's a chupacabra of the canal.

Your more than welcome. By any chance do any of you guys have one of this compound bows for fishing. You can come over about 10pm and try and shoot it. I can't get a pick but saw it again last night. So freaking big.

So it was you. Mystery solved. No wonder I didn't get a bite. Should have tied on some fried chicken or something. H
