I like to wade out in the pass on the surf side of the bridge on the brazoria county side. Since I sometimes go late in the day during the week it can be pretty deserted down there even in the summer sometimes. If I come in from wading and there are bad dudes in my area, a gun locked in the truck may not do me much good. Would the gun still work if I had it on me and it had been in the salt water? Also could you just clean it with fresh water and then lube it and it be ok?

buying a gun won't fix anything. Fix your ingnorance and learn how to use a gun safely and properly from a person who is willing to teach you. Best thing you could ever do. Get your concealed handgun permit and a dry box to put your gun in while you fish! Good luck!

I'm wet wading and who said I didn't know how to shoot a pistol or didn't plan on getting a concealed permit (I sold my handguns 18 years ago when my daughter was born). If you come in from wading the pass by yourself at dark and there are some bad actors around, a gun locked away in your truck is worthless as tits on a boar hog. Does anyone care to answer the question asked (stupid as it may sound) rather than offer unsolicited advice.

My bad, I do apologize. I thought maybe you have'nt had any experience. No you should'nt put a gun in water for long periods of time like that. Take a dry box out with you that fits your gun.

Actually the answer not to wet wade is a solicited answer, and a good recomendation. It will save you a lot of heart ache with your weapon over time. I know it gets too hot for noeprene but they have lightweight waders available. Dry is better.

That said, Use a corrosion resistant pistol finish. Detail strip, clean, and relube pistol as soon as possible after submersion or otherwise contaminated. Use rust protectant. Use waterproofed ammo, sealed better and has a lacquer sealant on the primer.

I know hand loaded ammo is not waterproof. Too many posts on water flooding ruining the ammo. Clear nail polish could be a good solution if you remember to do it but not sure and you'd have to do your own tests.

Even with proper cleaning I would be hesitant to trust that gun over time... I've just seen too much that the salt water does to proper gear, much less the springs inside a gun that would nto have the proper rust coatign on them regardless fo how often cleaned.

Thanks. Back when I used to shoot some this is not a question that I ever contemplated. This post made me think about it. Its really too bad that we even have to think about these kinda things, but I've always been a little nervous wading by myself in that area at nightfall and it sounds like things are now even worse than they used to be.

Thanks; but dry wading is out of the question because I often get too deep for waders in the spring/summertime (I also like swimming to 3rd bar when in the surf). And yes, I always wear a pfd in the pass, surf and at the mob (no death wish here).

That's cool. I remember the days I did that but age and the thankfullness of having a boat keep me from deep wading these days. Be safe out there.
Leave some for the rest of us, lol.

It really is a shame and sad that we even have to worry about such incidents occurring to one of us or anyone else out there just trying to enjoy what we all love.

guess we need to think about safety in numbers and post up for wading buddies. this blows as bad as the winds we're having.

San Luis pass has always been a dangerous place. Car/truck break ins, muggings, shootings. There are some bad characters that hang out there!!

Ever seen the graffiti under the bridge? No suprise as to the crowd that hangs out there and the activities that go on.

Here's to packin heat and thinning out the worlds trash.

Remember guys...Texas passed a law not long ago where you can keep a concealed handgun in your truck at all times without having to have a CHL. Just a heads up.

                            I hate this ****.

x2. Best get your CHL ASAP and get a waterproof box to carry it in while you're wading. This sucks.

I have a CHL for this very reason and take my S&W hammerless titanium ultra lite with me each time. Handles a .357 or 38 P Plus load. I have it in the hatch when in the kayak or in the leaning post in the boat. I don't carry it in the surf. You would need a waterproof container for that. If it gets wet, I would get rid of the bullets and put new ones in for the next trip. You would get water in the grip machanism and spring which would rust. You would have to take the grips off and clean in there. Of course, I'm talking about a revolver, too many things can go wrong with a semi-auto.
