  • Poker Run SLP to POC

This weekend the “San Louis Pass Outs”, completed the 3rd annual poker run from San Louis Pass to Port O’Connor.

We left from Treasure Island Saturday morning. We shot across Bastrop to the ditch and headed west.

Our first stop was in E.Matty. We cut across to the south shoreline at the Tri-Pod. The south shore line was more crowded than I anticipated. Running from Brown Cedar Flat west, we could night find a spot to fish till Kain Cove.

At Kain Cove we found red fish tailing against the shoreline but could not get a bite. I followed this school for thirty minutes and nothing. We spent too much time (30-40min per spot unless we are catching) there so we moved out to the Gulf Cut and continued our adventure in West Bay.

West Bay’s first stop was the Pipeline. Here we split up, two on the shoreline for reds and two going deep for trout. JH and RS scored a red a piece tight on the shore while John and I hit the “MOTHER LOAD” of 14 7/8” trout.

We continued the same pattern down West Bay’s south shoreline, making stops at Middle Grounds, Cottons Greens and ending at the Cedars. At the end of the day, our group had eight trout, two reds and a good BUZZ.

We stayed at The Inn at Clarks. It was a nice room and only two blacks away from Josie’s Cantina. If you have never had fish Tacos at Josie’s, you are missing out.
We walked back to our room after a great meal and a few DOS XX and all were asleep by 8:45.

Saturday morning we decided to continue heading west. We took the ICW into San Antonio Bay and worked the SAB reefs. We fished upper SAB for a few hours and struck out. The water was really fresh from the Guadalupe River runoff.

Next we struck out for the reefs off of Steamboat Island on the west side of Esprito Santo Bay. There we strung a few decent trout in the moving current of the deep guts between the reefs. We worked our East and found ourselves closing out the day with a few more trout at the Cedars.

As we returned to Clark’s, we discover that the Fishing Center is closed and we are out of beer and gas. Luckily we found gas at Froggie’s but RS and JH had to walk to the Speedy Stop for Beer. While Walking to Speedy Stop they hitched a ride with Capt. Dwayne Lowery who gave them a ride to Speedy Stop and carried them and our beer back to Clark’s. Thanks Dwayne!

Sunday Morning found us fishing the long sand bar off of Cottons. Each of us strung a few nice trout to take home for dinner and closed out a great fishing trip. We never really found the “Mother Load” but we enjoyed the fact that we still caught some decent fish.
During the trip we covered 270 miles of shore line. (98 miles from SLP to POC) We found some new territory to fish. For you Clive Custler fans out there, to top off the weekend, we pulled a Panama in the ditch out of Sergeant.

But best of all I got to spend some time with three of the best friends anyone could ask for. Everybody sing from the movie The Hang Over, “We the four best friends that any guy could have….”

That's a lot of distance in a boat! Looks like a blast though.
