  • Fishing around Tiki Island

We moved to Tiki Island and have only been in our house 2 months. I am curious. How would be the fishing be in my backyard/canal during winter? Warmer months? I haven't tried fishing yet and right now there are lot's of schools of mullet swimming through the lights and they are jumping around everywhere. Might try and get some with the castnet.

Well I am pretty sure there is no shortage of piggys in these canals so far. Tried some Gulp worked slow with only piggy-nibbles as a result. Went out this morning and threw my brand new castnet and caught 3/4 of a minnow trap attached to 30 feet of rope, and a 5" mullet! It only set me back a 6" hole a 2 broken drawstrings.

TB, the trout will move out in the winter, every now and then you can catch a few reds in the winter depending on where you live.
Once the bait, shad and shrimp start returning in the spring fishing will gradually improve throughout the summer. The quality of fishing
depends on the amount of bait. I have been in Tiki for 20 years and always have judged the summer fishing on the amount of early spring shad we have in the canals, the more the better.

It won't be long before the canals are full of sheepshead if you just want a pull. You will be able to sight cast to them from the deck. lol There are also some deep holes on several canals that will hold flounder in the colder months.

What do you sight cast to them? I get them under my dock in Bayou Vista but haven't been able to catch any.

shrimp. peel em and you'll get em even faster. Although they are fun to catch and don't taste bad they are hard to clean and you don't get much meat from them. Still a good line pull when you need to scratch that itch.

In today's Galveston Dailey News fishing report , Joe Kent said trout fishing has been slow , but , trout have been taken up to 7 pounds in Bayou Vista under the lights .

Last night we fished for a couple of hours. I caught a sand trout and a tiny flounder that couldn't have been but maybe 7". And I was surprised that my wife caught two big blue crabs and a stone crab. I figured it might be too cold for crabs. Water was clear enough to see bottom really well this morning so I got in (with waders!) and removed some trash around the dock. Good thing the house next door has a dock ladder. I didn't give it much thought when I first got in the water. hehe.

I stood on the 61st street pier a few years ago and watched the guy that worked there catch a sheepshead on a bit of slim jim. It was a 7-8lb fish. I'm not picky. I'll take sheepshead. I am 95% catch and release anyway. The 5% is for flounders

I really need to find some good spots around Tiki to fish on land, or wading, or kayaking. Those are my goals for the winter. That way I;ll be sort-of prepared for spring.

Sheephead is great, I prefer it to any other bay fish except possibly magrove snapper.

I do feel kind of bad with how little meat you get since they are all head and ribs!

If you can see, you could just stick 'em with a spear

If you have a kayak then you have it made. A golf cart will also get you on a bunch of lights.,
