I live 12 blocks from the seawall blvd. and wet wade between April through September. Best of my recollection I would say the groins between 14th Street and the Flagship reach to the gut between the second and third sandbars. So 4 to 6' of water. I may be X2ing someone else on this info but if so I agree with them.

Wait until Summer if you want to catch big fish on lures. Still gonna be a grind, and the best you can pretty much hope for is jacks and sharks. Most of the jacks I have caught were trolling on the yak, or sight casting to the big groups the cruise the surface.

Some of the guys here at work talk about catching king fish off the end of the Freeport jettys in the heat of the summer when the water calms down and greens up. Not sure how often it happens though -- you hear about the occasional ling as well -- russell lures have worked well offshore for me. Might be worth a shot.

Correct......I am only getting the ball rolling now so I will be ready by the time Summer rolls around. I still have lures to figure out and buy.

Consider yak fishing... Gotta find the fish and get to where they are, which is hard from the bank/rocks. You can drive the seawall or beach until you see bait busting and head out from there. Most big surface-running jack schools are a few hundred yards out, and I've seen kings and tarpon jumping at the S. Jetty (past the washouts that stop the walkers). You can also troll color changes and weed breaks.

Those big jack schools can be fun. I was dead-shrimping in the spring and had one come through. I threw my rig at it for the heck of it and one hit the shrimp and broke it off right away. I was burning the 1oz sinker back to the yak and another one hit it and broke that off too! I'm going to start carrying a hook-less topwater to watch them slam it over and over.

My buddy is one of the hardcore viet guys who fished the SS Jetty alot (before they got an offshore boat!). Finger mullet way out there on a cork or balloon is how they did it. Kings in that close are after mullet. It was still spotty action, most trips they were not there. I can see it being harder with artis.

By the way, thank you for not calling the groins jetties.
